Batting Cages
Clinton Lake Softball Complex, 5101 Speicher Rd.
The batting cages at Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Clinton Lake Softball Complex, 5101 Speicher Rd., are now open to the public.
The facility features four slow pitch softball stations, two fast pitch softball stations, one major league baseball station, two minor league baseball stations and one rookie station. One token buys 20 pitches; tokens may be purchased on site at a cost of $1 per token or seven tokens for $5.
In addition, tokens may also be purchased at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., at a rate of 15 tokens for $10 or 25 tokens for $15.
Facility hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through April 14. Extended hours of 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. will begin April 15 to Oct. 1.

The Family Outing Just Got Better! The new Juniors Golf Free program at Eagle Bend Golf makes it easier for families to enjoy time together on the links. These free inspections are sponsored by the Sake Kids of Douglas County Coalition. Call Connect Care at (785) 749-5800 for more information. In addition to the checklanes listed below, appointments can be made at designated times each month. Please have your child’s safety seat already installed upon arrival, and then it will be inspected and adjusted if needed.
Art Appreciation Classes
Spencer Museum of Art / The University of Kansas
Art appreciation classes for children and teens, ages 5-14 years. Every Saturday in June and July (excluding July 4), 2009.
Saturday Morning Classes: 10:30 AM – 12:30 NOON
Ages: 5-8 year olds. (4 year olds are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian)
Saturday Afternoon Classes: 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM
Ages: 9 – 14 year olds
Classes are $12 or $10 for Friends of the Art Museum members.
Enroll in four or more classes and receive a $2/per class discount.
Payment by exact cash or checks made payable to the Spencer Museum of Art. (We cannot accept credit cards)

Our self-guided monthly children’s activity is “Wendell Castle’s Clocks”
Family-based Sexuality Education
This 5-week course for 5th and 6th graders helps parents be the primary sexuality educators for their children. The course begins with a “parents only” night to provide information and answer questions. A parent attends each of the following four sessions with the child. A comprehensive, decision-making model of sexuality education is used. Teachers are registered nurses and social workers. Offered by Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department. Traditional Childbirth Preparation Classes

Five session childbirth preparation classes for expectant parents. Both weekday evening and some weekend options available. No baby care information included so expectant parents are encouraged to also enroll in the separate Babycare class. $40/person or $60/couple. Call early in pregnancy to enroll.

Refresher Childbirth Preparation

An individualized one session class for expectant parents who have experienced a previous childbirth and wish to discuss questions related to childbirth preparation and/or sibling adjustment. $20/person or $25/ couple. Classes set up as needed. Call (785) 505-3081 to arrange.
Becoming a Love and Logic Parent® Basic Class
Lawrence Memorial Hospital
The Becoming a Love and Logic Parent® course is available to take to parent groups (minimum of 5 parents) such as churches, schools or daycare PTA’s. This program is a nationally recognized commonsense parenting approach that teaches parents the skills to cultivate confidence and good decision-making in children, age 18 months+. For information or to schedule, please call (785) 505-3081. Class fee is $20/one parent, $25 for two parents from same family.

Early Childhood Parenting Made Fun®

When parents start using the Love and Logic® principles early in their children’s lives, they up the odds that the teenage years will be fun instead of frantic. This program focuses on parenting skills to use with children from birth to age six. Topics include offering choices, showing empathy and respect, and avoiding parenting by anger, threats, warnings or lectures. $15/parent or caregiver and $20 for two parents from the same family.
